1945 K&F Student

K&F – Kauffman and Fender – produced three models of lap steel along with accompanying amps. The Deluxe had a lacquer finish with a metal fretboard, the Standard had a natural finish with painted fret lines, and the Student were painted grey and had painted fret lines. The crinkle in the paint was applied by heating the instrument after the paint was applied; early examples were done in Doc Kauffman’s kitchen oven before the factory installed an industrial gas oven.

All three models featured the same “boxcar” pickup with volume and tone knobs. This Student steel is all original except for the tuner buttons (the gears themselves are original). The wood block inside the pickups indicates that it is an early example.
